A rtist Lee Benson gave an engaging talk Thursday to the high school student body on his favorite art element: texture. The most inspiring aspect of his speech came not from his interpretation of the element, but rather from his praise to God for giving us such an extraordinary invention. Mr. Benson illuminated several ways in which God injects the power of texture, physically and emotionally, into our lives each day and how we often neglect to credit Him for this miracle.

Thank you, Mr. Benson, for showing us how God is the original and ultimate artist.

Please join us for a short talk with Artist Lee Benson in the Sparks Chapel at 9:00 a.m. August 27, 2015.

This Thursday’s assembly topic is Renewing the Joy of their salvation, How to love Him. Mr. Benson is the head of the Art Department at Union University. He uses scale to push the limits of what is possible, but also allows himself an exploration of color, form and narrative that would be unavailable in a smaller format.

Professor Benson’s works will show from Tuesday, August 24th through September 21st in the Sparks Chapel Gallery.

On June 11th this summer, Suzie Wilder was privileged to attend the Scholastic Art & Writing Award Ceremony in Carnegie Hall in New York City. Luckily, Suzie was selected to attend the celebration after being drawn from the lottery for attendance. There are so many thousands of winners and family members of winners that only those chosen from the lottery are allowed to attend the event. In this picture Suzie’s Mom,  Ava, had to sit in the rows behind her even though they had won the attendance lottery for winners. Whoopee Goldberg encouraged art making youths to be courageous and continue to work hard in pursuing their art endeavors.

Suzie’s art was chosen out of some 4000 pieces of art and was awarded one of 2 American Vision Awards from the MidSouth region and the state of Tennessee.  Cotton Dress showed in a prestigious gallery in SoHo in New York City.  The work will then be on exhibition in Washington DC at the Corcoran Museum.  Suzie attends Parsons School of Design this fall after earning a scholarship that covers more than three quarters of her expenses for classes and residency.

The award winning art is attached. Cotton Dress is 3-D piece constructed from cotton burlap, raw cotton with stems from Suzie’s farm, cotton tarlatan, cotton yarns, and large buttons.

Congratulations, Suzie! We are so proud of you. Enjoy Parsons.
